When Every Outcome Fits
Plain text: article & replies ↗
A system of interpretation can become so accommodating that it loses its ability to distinguish between confirmation and contradiction.
At that point, anything can be made to fit. Agreement shows that the framework is illuminating; disagreement reveals resistance to what it illuminates. Success demonstrates that the method works; failure demonstrates the depth of the problem. The event changes, but its assigned role does not: each outcome becomes another reason to keep believing.
This creates a peculiar kind of invulnerability. The framework continues to produce explanations, sometimes elaborate and moving ones, while losing any clear way to recognize having been wrong.
Imagine someone proposing that every response you make is an attempt to assert control. Agreement becomes control through cooperation. Disagreement becomes control through opposition. Silence becomes withholding. Admitting uncertainty becomes a subtler performance of control. Even asking what would count against the interpretation can be described as an attempt to control the terms of the discussion.
Perhaps the interpretation illuminates something in a particular exchange. But what response could distinguish someone who fits the description from someone who does not? Its apparent universality has already been built into the procedure for interpreting responses.
The same structure can appear whenever an explanation reserves the right to change its level. A literal claim encounters difficulty and becomes symbolic. A symbolic reading encounters difficulty and becomes psychological. A psychological account encounters difficulty and becomes a statement about the limits of understanding. The conclusion survives by moving to a place where the objection no longer reaches it.
Any one of these moves might be defensible. The trouble begins when every move is permitted, every revision preserves the preferred conclusion, and none of the adjustments is allowed to count as a loss of confidence. The system becomes flexible everywhere except at the point of surrender.
This is what makes appeals to depth so ambiguous. Another interpretive layer can reveal an assumption we had missed. It can also give a threatened conclusion another place to retreat. An account can become more intricate while its relationship to what happened becomes less demanding. We can elaborate the reasons for a position, then elaborate the reasons for its opposite, and experience both as discoveries. The availability of a rich explanation establishes how much can be said. We still have to ask what favors it over the alternatives.
There is a difference here between finding meaning in an event and treating that event as evidence. I might interpret a setback as an invitation to become more patient. That interpretation could be useful, even transformative. It does not, by itself, establish that the setback happened in order to teach me patience. If success would also have been interpreted as a reward for patience, either outcome can sustain the story. The event has contributed little to choosing that story over another.
An interpretation can therefore retain its value while its claim to confirmation remains unsettled. Keeping that distinction visible matters. Otherwise, the satisfaction of making sense of something quietly becomes a reason to believe we have established why it occurred.
The difficulty is that we cannot simply step outside interpretation to inspect everything from nowhere. Even our judgments about evidence, relevance, and contradiction involve assumptions. Calling for a single decisive test will also miss much of what matters in an interpretation of a novel, a moral disagreement, or an experience of grief.
We can still ask what happens when an interpretation encounters resistance. Does the claim become narrower? Does confidence decrease? Does an alternative become more credible? Can the interpreter leave something unresolved? Can the explanation change in a way that affects a subsequent judgment, rather than merely acquiring another paragraph?
A framework that gives up nothing in response to difficulty can survive indefinitely. Its survival then provides very little reassurance about its adequacy. Nothing was permitted to threaten it.
This criticism has to accept the same exposure. If every convincing explanation is dismissed as rationalization, while every failed explanation is taken as proof that reasoning is arbitrary, the criticism becomes equally accommodating. It must leave room to recognize substantial revision: someone specifying their assumptions, encountering an inconvenient case, and changing a conclusion they had a reason to protect. The possibility of rationalizing opposing positions does not settle whether a particular argument has done so.
Perhaps the most revealing feature of an interpretation is what it allows to remain outside its explanation, and what it allows an encounter to change. There is a difference between being able to speak about everything and having learned something from what answered back.
When we call an interpretation deep, what should that depth help us distinguish? And what would it have to risk losing for an encounter with the world to count as confirmation?
